Opening Day Mets vs. Florida

Mets win, the Mets win! The sensational (not yet) Mets are 1-0 and like usual we dominate on opening day. Against a pitcher in the Marlin’s Josh Johnson, who normally owns us (now 7-1), the Mets looked impressive in front of a sold out CitiField.

Newcomers played well and David Wright went yard, hopefully both of which are signs of good things to come.

Johan Santana is looking like the Cy Young Award candidate that we predicted he would win, he will win, this year. With run support, 7 runs, Johan Santana could be the best pitcher in baseball. He has the advantage of pitching at CitiField, which is where home run hitters become sacrifice-fly hitters.

Yankees blew there opener against the Red Sox. Mets are 1-0 and the Yankees are 0-1. That feels good. Yankees victory last season over the Phillies earned them some love from Mets fans, because as much as we love saying Fuck the Yankees we would much rather them winning over those Phillies. Most Mets fans dislike our division rival much more significantly than even the depths of hatred we show towards the Yankees.

Mets Mets Official 2010 Baseball Season Predictions:

Mets win the division!
Johan wins the Cy Young
Wright finishes in the top 3 for MVP voting.

Cuba 300 Heart

What do they all mean? Well these are the three things I learned today during the Mets drubbing of the Florida Marlins.

1) Cuba. With Obama in the White House easing up some of the restrictions with Cuba, Livan Hernandez can now freely travel to his homeland. This probably makes him happy. A happy Livan could be a CY Young candidate. Why Not? He has been a consistent 50% win 50% loss pitcher the last few years, and that was without the run support the Mets produce.

2) 300. The Mets have never been a team with hitters who bat over 300. Look at the records, only David Wright and John Olerud have ever hit over .300 in their career as a Met. This is all about to change. The fast start has 6 starters over 300. Hot hitting is contagious and with this talented lineup there are always gonna be hot hitters around. I would not be surprised if 5 or 6 Mets finish over 300.

3) Heart. This team has Heart. When you have the right group of players, special things happen. When the Face of the Franchise wears his Heart on his sleeve, it makes cheering for him so much more.

Ask Yankee fans how they feel cheering for A-Rod. They know he is nothing more then a cheater. They can only root for him as a means to score another run. There is no love there.

With David it is different. We love him. We will always cheer him even if he never gets another hit, because he plays the game for all of the right reasons.

He plays with heart.

14 Runners Left on Base

Mets lose to the Florida Marlins 5-4.

The good news is that the Mets (2-2) had plenty of opportunities considering they left at least one runner on base every inning. Alarming is the lack of clutch hitting.

Marlins are 4-0. Phillies (1-2) got lit up by Colorado and Atlanta (2-1) beat the perpetual doormat of the NL east.

The Mets need to win the series against the Marlins to bring them back down to Earth before they get on one of those silly 20 game win streak and screws up the division. Sunday is in the bag with Johan going, so hopefully Livan can bring back that magic he had when he broke out in the world series a decade ago and get us a win on Saturday. Livan Hernandez started his career pitching for the Marlins in 1996, the Mets are the eighth team in his career. Livan, please have one more great year left in the tank.
